The Cartier Tank is one of the most iconic watch designs ever produced. Not only are Cartier’s designs iconic, but the company is also responsible for creating the first wristwatch for men. Aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont shared with Louis Cartier the difficulties of using a pocket watch while flying. Louis Cartier responded with a solution—a watch that could be worn on the wrist, allowing the pilot to keep both hands free. This is how the first Cartier Santos was born.
The model we offer here is the Tank Normale. Why “Tank,” you may ask? Louis Cartier served on the front during World War I, where the shape of the Renault FT-17 tank inspired him. Its silhouette later influenced the design of a new watch case, and in 1919 the iconic Cartier Tank was created.
Many decades and variations later, in the 1980s, this petite gold Tank model was introduced. It is a truly classic and spectacular timepiece. Our example is beautifully preserved, featuring an elegantly aged dial with subtle hairline patina and deep blue hands.
The case is made of 18K gold, with finely brushed sides and sharply polished bezel edges—a vibrant timepiece and a true collector’s item.
